Annual Fireplace &
Chimney Inspection
What is a Level 1 Inspection?
A Level 1 inspection is the standard annual fireplace and chimney inspection recommended by NFPA 211 for systems that have been operating under normal conditions with no significant changes.
If you've been enjoying your fireplace regularly and haven't made any modifications to the fireplace, chimney, or venting system, a Level 1 inspection is the recommended way to help ensure everything continues operating safely and efficiently.
During the inspection, we evaluate all readily accessible components of your fireplace and chimney system, looking for signs of wear, damage, creosote buildup, deterioration, improper clearances, or other conditions that could affect safe operation.
Recommended For
✓ Annual fireplace maintenance
✓ Regular wood-burning or gas fireplace use
✓ Fireplaces with no recent modifications
✓ Homeowners preparing for fireplace season
✓ Peace of mind before lighting your first fire
Frequently Asked Questions

A Level 1 inspection includes a visual examination of all readily accessible components of your fireplace and chimney system. We evaluate the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue, chimney cap, flashing, clearances, venting system, and other visible components for signs of deterioration, damage, or improper operation.
-
While not required by law, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends an annual inspection for all fireplaces and chimneys, regardless of how often they're used. Regular inspections help identify potential issues before they become safety hazards.

A Level 1 inspection does not include video scanning of the flue, evaluation of concealed areas, or destructive investigation. If conditions warrant a more comprehensive evaluation, we'll recommend a Level 2 or Level 3 inspection.
-
Visible signs of water intrusion, such as staining, deteriorated mortar, damaged flashing, or rusted components, can often be identified during a Level 1 inspection. Hidden damage may require a higher level of inspection.
-
When it is safe and accessible, yes. If roof access is unsafe due to weather, roof pitch, or other hazards, we use alternative methods to evaluate the chimney's condition while following industry safety practices.

Absolutely. If your fireplace or chimney would benefit from cleaning, we can often schedule both services together, saving you time and ensuring your system is ready for the season.
-
Please ensure the fireplace is cool, the area around the hearth is accessible, and any furniture or decorations that may block access have been moved. We'll take care of the rest.
-
That's actually one of the best times to schedule a Level 1 inspection. Before using a fireplace that has been sitting unused, it's important to verify that the chimney and venting system are safe, unobstructed, and in proper working condition.
